"Avengers: Endgame" Originally Had A Scene Where Thanos Decapitated Captain America And It Sounds WILD - BuzzFeed

Avengers: Endgame had everybody shook when it finally hit cinemas in April. But the people behind the highest-grossing movie of all time* recently revealed that there were plenty more shocks planned that didn't make it to our screens, including a pretty grisly end for Captain America.

*In case you missed the news, Avengers finally surpassed Avatar as the highest-grossing movie ever. After being re-released in cinemas with extra footage, Endgame now has a worldwide gross of almost $2.8 billion.

The scene in question depicted a 2014 Thanos going to Earth to fight the Avengers while Nebula time-travelled to 2023 in order to open the portal for the final battle sequence.

While on Earth, Thanos was meant to not only kill 2014 Captain America but decapitate him too, taking his head through the portal to 2023 where he would mic-drop it in front of present-day Captain America.

According to Endgame's rules for time-travel, Thanos killing 2014 Captain America would've had no effect on present-day Captain America. Instead, it would've just set up an alternate reality. Listen, I know it all sounds complicated, don't blame me!

While at San Diego Comic-Con, director duo Anthony and Joe Russo revealed to Entertainment Weekly that they "clung" to the scene in question for a long time and only begrudgingly let it go when they realised that it just wasn't working.

Joe said: "Anthony and I were clinging to this concept that we wanted Thanos to walk up to the Avengers and throw Captain America’s head on the ground. We couldn’t give up on it, and finally we said, 'All right, what if we don’t do that, can we find another way into the third act?' And that’s when it turned into what it is now."

Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely clarified that they weren't ever going to kill present-day Captain America, they just planned on "showing living Steve his own head".

But Stephen explained that the concept turned out to be "super confusing", not least because they already had a lot of loose ends to tie up without adding a decapitated Steve Rogers from the past to the mix.
