Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker explained: spoilers, cameos & that ending - Polygon

In 1977, George Lucas introduced the world to Luke Skywalker, a scrappy kid who dreamed of blasting off from his sandy planet into adventure. Forty years later, Lucas’ galaxy is an alternate universe, full of alien populations, retrofuturistic technology, warring philosophies, and enough history to fill a hundred textbooks. Star Wars is alive, even as an era comes to an end.

This month’s The Rise of Skywalker concludes the Skywalker Saga with the final journey of Luke’s heir: Rey, the scrappy kid who dreamed of blasting off from a different sandy planet into adventure. Luke is by her side in spirit, as are every Jedi who came before her. But just as Lucas’ prequel films followed the evolution of Anakin Skywalker to deepen Darth Vader’s connection to his wayward son, the sequel trilogy refocused its lens on a modern young woman, and the mantle of “Skywalker” she was destined to take on. Luke was mortal. Being a hero to the galaxy lives on generation after generation.

The Rise of Skywalker delivers an epic conclusion to both Rey’s journey that’s also stuffed with Star Warsisms. There’s so much iconography, so much connective tissue to both the movies and the Expanded Universe, and so much going on in the film that it demands a deep read. That’s where we come in. In these stories, we sift through lore and make sense of Abrams and Lucasfilm’s big choices. These are the stories you’re looking for.
